Dan Tatum

Our July Limelight artist is Dan Tatum. His exhibit is titled, “Near and Far” and the opening reception will be held on Friday, July 19th from 5 – 8 p.m.

Dan’s earliest art lessons were at the age of 8 in Florence, Alabama from Mrs. Corrine Tuthill who was head of the Art Department of what is now the University of North Alabama. In the sixth grade, at Kilby Training School, he was the artist for the school student paper, “The Kilby Pig” (it was full of news). While earning his engineering degree at Auburn University he was a co-op student and worked at NASA in Huntsville, Alabama. Over the last twenty years Dan created over 100 watercolor and ink caricatures as departing gifts for employees in the offices where he worked as an engineer and manager at Redstone Arsenal. He also was a facilitator for Army Leadership classes until retiring in 2004. As a certified trainer in leadership and Myer-Briggs he has taught management and other classes for universities and corporations.

In his 20’s and 30’s Dan said that he dabbled some with acrylics and oil and sold several pieces but did not seriously begin art lessons again until 1984 when he took a basic drawing class at UAH, Continuing Education. Since that time, Dan has studied under Chuck Long (watercolor), Don Howard (caricatures), Cindy Procius (caricatures), Cynthia Parsons (workshop), Heike Covell (watercolor), Marcia Leonard (pastel), Matting and Framing (Josh Logan), Kathryn Vaughn (watercolor), and Helga Flower (watercolor).

Dan has served three terms as President of the Huntsville Art League where some of his art is on exhibit. He was previously president of the board of directors of Theatre ‘Round the Corner, on the board of Huntsville Little Theatre, chair of an Arts Council special committee, president of Big Spring and Prattville Civitan Clubs, and president of his social fraternity at Auburn, Delta Upsilon. Dan considers one of his greatest honors was to be chosen to receive the Vigil honor with the Boys Scout of America Order of the Arrow.

The majority of his work is in pastels and watercolors which depict scenes of travel with his wife in the U.S., Europe, and the Tropics. He says that he enjoys when he finds and captures the irony of a particular scene or a concrete abstract which may cause a viewer to pause to say “Hmmm!” Dan’s work has been juried into a number of art shows and exhibits where he has received awards. He recently was awarded second place in the world wide U.S. Army MWR Art Contest. His work hangs in many private collections as well as on the walls of many offices.

His wife, Patricia and he reside in historic Huntsville Five Points. She is an independent corporate project management trainer and CEO of Tatum Associates International, LLC. Additionally, she is an award winning stained glass artist. They have one son and 4 daughters, son Grant is a graphic designer in Birmingham, daughter Kory is a master scenic artist currently living in Hawaii with her US Army husband, daughter Jennifer is a child psychologist in Birmingham, daughter Kelly is a food services manager at Huntsville Hospital, and daughter Sara is a neuro-psychologist in Charlotte, NC. Dan is the proud grandparent of 7 boys and one girl.
