Dan Tatum

My earliest art lessons were at the age of 8 in Florence, Alabama from Mrs. Corrine Tuthill, head of the Art Department of what is now the University of North Alabama. In the sixth grade, at Kilby Training School, I was the artist for the school paper, “The Kilby Pig” (it was full of news). While earning my engineering degree at Auburn I was a co-op student and worked at NASA in Huntsville on the Saturn V Apollo Project. During the twenty years before I retired from my position Redstone Arsenal as an engineering manager, I was the “de facto” office artist. I created over 100 watercolor and ink caricatures as departing gifts for employees.

After college I painted and sold a few oil and acrylics Then I took workshops from Duncan Ceramics Products and earned certification as an instructor. I opened a ceramics shop in 1974 when I lived in Prattville, Alabama. Back in Huntsville in 1984 I took a Continuing Education drawing class at UAH and later enrolled at Calhoun Community College where I took watercolor classes. I studied independent classes from several instructors: Don Howard and Cindy Procius (caricatures), Cynthia Parsons (workshop), Marcia Leonard (pastel), Matting and Framing (Josh Logan), and watercolor with Heike Covell, Kathryn Vaughn, and Helga Flower.

I was elected and served as president of the Huntsville Art League for three years. Previously I was president of the board of directors of Theatre ‘Round the Corner, on the board of Huntsville Little Theatre, chair of an Arts Council special committee, president of Huntsville Big Spring and Prattville Civitan Clubs, and president of my social fraternity at Auburn, Delta Upsilon. I received the Vigil honor with the Boys Scout of America Order of the Arrow.

Most of my work is in pastels or watercolors with which I depict scenes of travel with my wife in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the Tropics. I enjoy when I find and depict the irony of a particular scene or a concrete abstract which may cause a viewer to pause to say “Hmmm!” I have been juried into a number of art shows and exhibits where I have received awards for my work in ceramics, pastels, and watercolor.

My wife, Patricia and I reside in historic Huntsville Five Points. She is a corporate trainer and was CEO of Tatum Associates International, LLC. We have five children and seven grandsons. Son Grant is a graphic designer in Birmingham. Daughter Kory is a master scenic artist working on TV shows in Atlanta. Daughter Jennifer is a child psychologist in Birmingham. Daughter Kelly is a nurse at Cullman Hospital.
